Glamour Mag.~ Makeup Brushes In The Dishwasher???

I got my new issue of Glamour today. I was skimming through it and I read something interesting to say the least.

On page 70 under beauty DOs it says to wash your makeup brushes in the dishwasher.

I personally would never do this! Have you ever heard of anyone doing this?

I know it says a light cycle but still I could just not do this. One reason being fear that it would damage my brushes that I have spent too much money on and another being that I think it's just kinda gross! Lol!

I don't know, I just wouldn't do it.

Tell me have you heard of this? Have you done it? How did it turn out? Would you do it?

Thanks for following, reading, and commenting!

I'm glad to hear everyone agrees with me and thinks this is crazy! Lol! I don't know what Glamour Mag. was thinking! Surely the brushes would get ruined! I just hope no one actually tries this since they recommended it!

Oh my! I would never do this! Esp if you stand them up in the silver wear tray it will certainly ruin them! Plus I know that dishwasher detergent is super strong, I would be way to nervous to do that!

I have never tried it, however I personally wouldn't risk it, I mean we have brush cleaners for a reason right? the hair on the brushes can be so delicate, in my opinion it would fluff... just from touching it you can kind of judge that. and the plastic or wooden handle may get ruined also... :( no no no i would never do that... but that's just me :P

Omg, I cant believe they suggested to wash brushes in the dishwasher and stand them in a cup to dry. Standing them up to dry will damage the wood! Thats some awful advice.

Oh god, i'd never do this. The heat will still be too hot. The chemicals from the washing will damage it too. And the sheer fact that not all dishwater is clean (like in the adverts) will risk spreading bacteria on it that is not safe for our skin. Understandibly some bacteria that is transfered to inside our bodies will be ok because we have acids and an immune system...our faces don't!

lol I wonder who thought to do this in the first place smh. I don't own a dishwasher but if I did I would not put my makeup brushes in there. It sounds like an accident waiting to happen.

I have never heard of this either and definitely would not do/recommend it. Surely water will get into the handles this way and eventually ruin the brushes. I barely use my dishwasher even for the dishes but I have been known to put dish cloths in the dishwasher and they come out lovely:) xx

Oh my gosh... that thought had never occurred to me!!

eeeeewww!! not a chance. No way. Gross. I mean, seriously. Plus, those detergents are harsh (which is fine for plates of course).

That is bazzar! I would think that the heat might melt the glue or something?? I can't imagine it would be too hygenic either. No, for the sake of saving a few minutes?? I think I'd rather wash them myself! :)

That sounds like horrible advice. I think that would ruin your brushes for sure. Why would anyone want to put their brushes in the dishwasher??

I think the result will be a 'gambling result' whether your brush clean or damage.. lol
I will never do that, I think.. I usually soak my brush in warm water plus baby soap.. it works well so far..

OMG that is so funny! I reacted just the same way as you did when I read this in my Glamour mag, and I whought I'd share on my blog, too xD I think it's so weird because I've always been told to not immerse brushes in water as it could make the handle weak.

No way would I ever do this! Wouldn't they get smashed, frayed, lost in there? I have a couple brushes that are so small, I probably would never see them again! Fun post though ;)

Wow! So next should we start washing our hair with dish soap?! EEK! THERE IS NO WAY I could ever do that! Mild soap and hand washing ONLY for me!!

This seems so insane. I would also NEVER do this. What a strange thing from such a well known mag.

Ok, I agree with everyone else, that's just gross (especially w/my dishwasher, they would come out dirtier than they went it.) But, could you give me the scoop on the proper way to clean make-up brushes?

thx

putting brushes in the dishwasher? hmmm... that's very risky. i wouldn't try it either. i can't imagine what it can do the ferule and how the brushes will shed their bristles like crazy.

i wonder if they did make a typo. i do like their suggestion of double coats of mascara though. hehehe... :D

im gonna try this on some cheap makeup brushes and see how it turns out. also, im sure they meant wash them alone in the dishwasher, not with dirty dishes in there, haha

i just tried it this morning.. there was no damage done to my brushes although they did come out looking like little wet animals. now i'm just waiting for them to dry!
